John M. Salmon IV, M.D
John (who has gone by “J.” his entire life) has been a practicing pathologist in Lynchburg, VA for almost twenty years, but has progressively become more focused on cooperative projects in the city, driven by a realization that health is more about the health of the community than the delivery of healthcare. He founded Unified Potential, Inc. with the goal of creating assets that allow providers to meaningfully affect the health of patients within the community, and enabling individuals to improve their own lives as well as the collective health of the community.
He helped develop the multidisciplinary lung cancer program at the Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center and has served as Physician Liaison to the Commission on Cancer since its opening. He is a long-time board member and past president of the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine and is currently the president of the board of Archetype Health, also chairing the quality committee and sitting on the governance board. He is currently on the board of Centra Alliance, the Centra Health-sponsored accountable care organization.
J. began the development of MoveUP while serving at the request of then-mayor Joan Foster as a facilitator of the transportation subgroup of Lynchburg’s Poverty 2 Progress initiative. His work in this arena led to the development of a unique hypothesis on the underlying etiology of poverty and subsequent proposal of a potential therapy which might be applied to a community as a whole, analogous to testing a novel therapeutic drug in a patient with an as yet incurable disease.
J. graduated cum laude from the College of William and Mary in 1991, receiving a BS in Chemistry with High Honors. He received his MD from the Medical College of Virginia at VCU in 1995. He completed four years of residency in clinical and anatomic pathology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and completed a fellowship in surgical and cytopathology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He is Board Certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Within the Centra Health Laboratory system, he serves as the laboratory medical director at Southside Community Hospital, Gretna Medical Center, and Centra Specialty Hospital.
Bryan’s ability to adapt to unexpected challenges and create real-world solutions with the available tools has made him a valuable manager in the business world, but his ability to coordinate the logistical nightmare that is an online racing series sets him in a class of his own. This virtual world contains every facet of its real-world counterpart, including every potential hurdle. Bryan is also an accomplished photographer. He and his fiancé live in Raleigh, NC.
He has successfully developed, organized, and implemented several multi-race series with drivers and teams from all over the world, managing events simultaneously on multiple platforms; implementing team communication systems for logistics and data sharing; sponsorship recruitment and social media promotion; real-time broadcast with data support of professional race announcement; graphic design with logo and livery creation and digital implementation.
Chris is a self-taught engineer who began programming at just ten years of age. His hobby quickly became a passion, which ultimately developed into a successful career as a Software Engineer.
Chris is always thinking of new ways to innovate projects. During his free time, he reverse engineered the communication protocol of one of his vehicles. At work, he created a new verification and assessment system to significantly drive down cost and directly impact revenue. Where there is a new challenge, Chris will create a successful solution.
Chris, his wife, Colleen, and their son, Lincoln reside in Lynchburg, Virginia where Chris grew up. Chris is excited to be a part of MoveUp and to make a difference in the community he calls home.
Chris has been a serial entrepreneur throughout his professional life, having owned and operated businesses through acquisition as well as having created multiple startups. His current businesses have revenues of approximately $45 million. He has extensive knowledge regarding the Vehicle Service Contract industry, Aftermarket and OE parts operations and their effects on Fixed Operations, the Independent Mechanical Inspection industry, and the integration of all of the above, including with the major DMS providers to new car dealerships throughout the country. Chris is excited to help guide MoveUP as it helps to tackle the most pressing societal issues by bringing essential and proven real-world capabilities to a decidedly philosophical project.
His specialties involve new product development and how to fully integrate them with existing business platforms, which he’s done with B to C businesses directly serving the public, B to B companies serving and supporting small and large service contract companies, and creating new products that have been adopted by industry leading corporations, such as AutoNation (the country’s largest new car dealer group), Mercedes Benz USA, Southeast Toyota, and Ford Motor Company.
After graduating from the Lawrenceville School, Chris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in government from the College of William and Mary in 1991. Chris has been recognized as a Virginia finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year contest.
With over two decades of executive leadership in development, planning, architecting, and, testing and implementation, Darrell has a skill for bringing out the best in people’s vision. His gift for translating highly technical jargon into a practical language that people understand, coupled with his innate ability to help individuals visualize their future and manifest their goals, is what distinguishes Darrell from the rest. Through his countless years of experience molding and shaping the minds of even the least technologically savvy, Darrell knows first hand that achieving success is a possibility for everyone.
Entrepreneurship is not foreign to Darrell as he co-founded EngageMore, a tech startup serving the fitness industry helping staff members engage with members—used in over 100 clubs in the US and Canada. Prior to his leadership efforts, Darrell, a software developer by education and passion, created and managed hundreds of websites, mobile apps and enterprise integrations for small businesses to large organizations such as state and federal government, banking and automotive.
Darrell serves as a cloud solution architect with Microsoft working directly with CxOs of the world’s largest nonprofits in their digital transformation to the Azure cloud. His passion for the nonprofit sector began while serving as CTO for Think of Us, where he and his co-workers to this day are striving to use technology to improve the lives of youth transitioning out of foster care.
Edith A. Perez, M.D
Edith is an internationally recognized translational researcher and cancer specialist and Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic and Director of the Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Translational Genomics Program. Her experience includes leadership in academic and biopharmaceutical environments and philanthropic contributions to effective patient care through translational research and educational endeavors. These activities have been local, national, and global in scope.
Edith’s career has spanned from her medical school in Puerto Rico, to electives while student at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NY, residency and fellowship training in California, academic career at Mayo Clinic, and 3 years in the biopharmaceutical industry (Vice President BioOncology U.S. Medical Affairs, Cancer Immunotherapy Governance Committee, Medical Leadership Team, Joint Oncology Leadership Team at Genentech). Moreover, she has been active in ASCO, AACR, added to a wide range of committees and projects with the Institute of Medicine, the NCI, and Stand Up to Cancer. Some of these include membership or leadership in Program Committees, Guidelines, Government Affairs Finance, Disparities Councils, amongst many others. Activities with the NCI have included full involvement and leadership in the Cancer Cooperative system, membership in the Board of Scientific Advisors (BSA)and the Clinical and Translational Trials Committee (CTAC), to name a few. She is frequently invited to lecture at national and international meetings across the globe. Known for her integration of basic science, trial work, and patient management – Edith is often a key note speaker who inspires the health care professional audiences and patients. She has been honored by receiving many scientific and humanitarian awards over the years and is known for her strategic vision in designing innovative clinical trials, her passion / voice of the patient, and her strong team leadership.
Breast Cancer Marathon
Edith is the co-developer of the 26.2 National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer (breastcancermarathon.com), with goals to raise funds for underserved women and genomics/immunologic translational cancer research. More than 12,000 families have received assistance from the proceeds and more than $4M raised for cancer research.
Edith earned her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan and completed her residency in internal medicine at the Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. She served as general internist in the Division of National Health Services Corps, Los Angeles, and completed her Hematology/Oncology fellowship at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine. Edith also pursued additional leadership, management and executive development at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Kennedy School in Boston. Dr. Perez is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology.
Steve has more than forty years experience in the field of software engineering, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. Outside of the computer field, he is an avid runner, and enjoys working in his garage. His current project is a frame-off restoration of his 1968 Corvette convertible. Steve is happily married, and raising two girls that are both studying engineering at Virginia Tech.
Steve brings nearly 30 years of experience in the domain of transportation logistics to the team. He recently served as an executive for Roadnet Technologies (formerly known as UPS Logistics Technologies, Inc.), a leading provider of vehicle routing and scheduling software. Roadnet Technologies enables organizations with fleets and mobile resources to gain a competitive advantage through lowered transportation costs, improved customer service, and enhanced transportation intelligence, provided through an integrated fleet management platform. These products are used by over 2,000 companies worldwide.
During his tenure at Roadnet, Steve held numerous positions including Senior Software Engineer, Manager of Product Development, and most recently VP of Product Development. In addition to his work as an executive, he made significant engineering contributions to Roadnet’s product lines, including design and implementation of the transportation network subsystem, routing and scheduling algorithms, and the product’s user interface.
He holds 5 patents related to this work. Prior to joining Roadnet, Steve worked at Westinghouse for 5 years in the Advanced Signal Processing division. While there, he received the George Westinghouse award for his work on a classified project during Operation Desert Storm.
Andrew B. Stockment
Andrew is an attorney with Flora Pettit PC in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he advises clients regarding business law, intellectual property and technology, cybersecurity and data privacy, and private equity and securities. Andrew is a technology and innovation enthusiast and works with startups and established companies to form and grow their businesses and develop, protect, and license their intellectual property assets, and he advises clients regarding the operation, purchase, financing, and sale of businesses. Andrew also counsels clients regarding information governance and data security and privacy issues and assists organizations with the legal response to data breaches.

Andrew regularly publishes and speaks on intellectual property, technology, and data privacy and security issues, and he has been selected to the « Legal Elite » list by Virginia Business magazine (2019) and the Virginia Rising Stars list by Super Lawyers (2013 – 2019), and he has received the Emerson G. Spies Award from The Virginia Bar Association (VBA). He currently serves on the VBA Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law Section Council and he previously served on the VBA Board of Governors and is a former chair of the VBA Young Lawyers Division.
Before becoming an attorney, Andrew worked as a software engineer for a publicly traded healthcare information technology company and owned a website development business for several years. Andrew graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served on the Editorial Board of the Virginia Law Review and the Managing Board of the Virginia Journal of Social Policy & the Law, and he earned his bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems and Political Science from Florida State University.
Colonel William L. Burnham
Colonel Burnham settled in Lynchburg, VA after a long and distinguished military career spanning from special operations and counter intelligence in the 1980s and ‘90s in highly sensitive world-wide locations to managing both manned and unmanned Army Aerial Vehicle Programs including Commander, 15th Military Intelligence Battalion (Aerial Exploitation); Deputy Chief of Staff, III Corps; and Aviation Test Director, U.S. Army Operational Test Command in Fort Hood TX. More recent endeavors include founding the multifaceted start-up Seven Hills Enterprises, LLC and teaching U.S. History and an Advanced Adventure Math elective to sixth graders at Linkhorne Middle School from 2008-2013, improving the SOL pass rate from 60% to 98% while including students with special needs.
Bill has BS in Criminal Justice from Westfield State College, a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University, and was a Distinguished Graduate from the U.S. Marine Corps Command and General Staff College. He has extensive training in covert surveillance, intelligence and counterintelligence, and is certified by the FAA to fly about anything that flies, including licenses for Airline Transport Pilot, Rotorcraft-Helicopter, and Commercial Sea Planes. He is a Certified Divemaster, and Instructor of Skiing and Mountaineering.
Susan Richardson is passionate about serving people with disabilities, creating jobs for people of all abilities, and protecting the natural resources of the environment through creating sustainable food practices. She received her M.S. in Behavior Analysis in 1999 and was one of the first Board Certified Behavior Analysts in the country. She has spent most of her adult life creating companies that are dedicated to supporting her passions. When Susan is not working in her businesses, she can be found with her family at the theatre supporting her oldest son, Connor, or at the hockey rink supporting her youngest son, Brennan.
Susan founded MillarRich in 2007 which has grown to support over 170 individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in the Middle Tennessee region. MillarRich pairs individuals of all ages together with families so that they may thrive in a family setting when their own family is not able to provide care, either because the natural family has aged, or because children have been placed in state custody and need a safe, loving environment to help recover from trauma they have experienced at a young age. MillarRich is dedicated to creating independent lifestyle for individuals which is evidenced by the Supported Employment division at MillarRich. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is extremely high, but MillarRich is changing all of that by working with people, discovering what they like to do, and then supporting them with a job coach as they gain community employment.
The Old School Farm
Susan founded The Old School Farm in 2014, a non-profit organization in Nashville, whose mission is to create meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities through an agriculture and arts program. The two-acre farm provides a CSA to the local community and also supplies local restaurants with vegetables and pottery. The farm provides educational and volunteer opportunities for the local schools, including Cora Howe and Curry Ingram, who primarily serve individuals with disabilities. There is an all abilities line of pottery that is available for sale at local craft markets as well as on site.
The Old School Nashville is dedicated to local food sourcing and everything served in the restaurant is sourced from within a 30 mile radius of the property. All food is made from scratch and the restaurant is part of the Zero Food Waste initiative. The Old School Nashville recycles and composts all food scraps and serves as a model site for how restaurants can be responsible towards the environment. Susan and Rowan were asked to be partners in another venture and opened Cafe Ma’Kai in 2019 in order to bring the farm-to-table aspect of sustainable food and responsible sourcing to another small coffee shop in Nashville.
The latest venture involves a current project, Cheekee Greens. Cheekee Greens is in the process of developing an onsite mushroom farm and hydroponic vertical greenhouse that will be growing lettuce to supply the Nashville area with local, sustainable produce instead of having Nashville rely on shipping this produce in from out of state.
The Old School Farm is located on the grounds of the former Wade Elementary School in Nashville, TN. The Wade Elementary school was constructed by money from the WPA works project in 1936 and had been left abandoned in 1996. Susan and her business partner (Rowan Millar) purchased the building in 2012, spent a year renovating this former treasure, and received an award from the Nashville Historic Commission for their work in restoring the building, which had been listed of one of the top buildings to save in 2012. The purchase of the building marked the beginning of her passion surrounding sustainability. During renovation, a conscious decision was made to make the building as environmentally friendly as possible, and geo-thermal heating and air was installed. The former elementary school now houses the administrative offices of MillarRich and is also home to the award-winning Old School Nashville, a unique farm-to-table restaurant that was founded by Susan and Rowan in 2015.
Detective Collin Byrne
A lifelong student, Collin diversified his training and experience by delving into technology-facilitated crime and digital forensics. He became involved with proactive online investigations regarding child exploitation, specifically targeting individuals in central Virginia who share child pornography on the Bittorrent, eDonkey, Gnutella, and Ares file-sharing networks. Collin has been involved with various organizations in the Lynchburg area. He is the past President of the Paul Munro Elementary School PTA, past board member and coach with Blue Ridge Lacrosse Club, as well as past board member and Treasurer of Peakland Swim and Tennis Club.
In addition to conducting forensic examinations of hard drives and mobile devices, Collin has investigated the breach of networks and cloud-based accounts and services. His efforts led to the arrest and conviction of an Indianapolis resident who was hacking the iCloud accounts of victims across the country, including two victims in Lynchburg. Collin is a Certified Cyber Crime Examiner (CCCE), a digital forensic certification created by the National White Collar Crime Center.
Collin grew up on Long Island, New York and settled in Lynchburg upon migrating to Virginia for college. A social science major at Liberty University, Collin began his law enforcement career in 1998. He quickly gravitated towards criminal investigations, then branched out into crime scene forensics and fire cause and origin investigations. In 2002, Collin graduated from the Virginia Forensic Science Academy, a 10 week training conducted by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science. After continuing to develop his skills and knowledge, he gained certification as a Bloodstain Pattern Analyst.
Stuart D. Rettie
Currently serving as Principal for Balmedie Consulting, Stuart has thirty eight years of upstream oil and gas expertise developed from working and living across the globe in locations including: USA and Canada; Europe, the Middle East; West Africa; Trinidad; Southeast Asia and Australia. Stuart was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He and his wife presently live in Houston, Texas.
Stuart has held leadership positions in project management, engineering, procurement, R&D, and operations. He has a track record for developing and leading multi-disciplined owner teams in successfully delivering complex, multi-billion dollar Greenfield and Brownfield land-based and offshore projects. Stuart is currently working with a team in validating new technologies to safely unlock access to high-pressure and high-temperature deep water hydrocarbon resources.
Stuart’s racing resume is extensive, spanning from Alberta Veteran Motocross Champion in 1990 to 2017 Masters Champion of the pro-level IMSA Prototype Challenge series.
Academics & Publications
His education and credentials include a B.Sc. Petroleum Eng. (Honors), Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology, 1985. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications and holds two patents for new technologies developed with his field of expertise.
Serge grew up in the travel/airline business, and went on to graduate from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration in 1981. His first job was as an analyst with Pannell, Kerr Foster (PKF) performing feasibility studies for hotels. In 1985, he joined Marriott International and later rose to Vice President of Sales Planning and Analysis. While at Marriott Serge pioneered the role of Data Mining to answer three questions: 1) How many sales people should we have; 2) Where should they be located and 3) Who should they be calling on?
Bringing his expertise to Lynchburg
After 13 years at headquarters, Serge made the decision to retire from Marriott in 1998. He relocated to Lynchburg, Virginia so he could take his “big city, big company” hotel industry expertise and offer it to clients at small town prices. Early clients included Kraft, Nabisco, Gillette, and Hershey Foods. Today virtually all of the major hotel companies in North Americas, including Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham, Hyatt, InterContinental, Sofitel, and Omni, rely on Topline Group to manage much of their customer data, and deliver insights that are not otherwise possible.
DiCarlo is the current Orchestra Director at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, and she serves as the Adjunct Violin and Viola Instructor at Randolph College. Additionally, she is the current Chair of South Central Senior Regional Orchestra and the Director of the Lynchburg Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings.
Gina began studying music seriously at an early age, attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Music during her middle and high school years. She graduated from the program with honors, and won two concerto competitions on violin during her time there, performing the Barber violin concerto and Zigeunerweisen with orchestra. After high school, DiCarlo studied at the Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Lynn Blakeslee. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance and Music Education from ESM, with honors, in 2014.
DiCarlo performs regularly on the violin, both in chamber and orchestral settings. She has been a member of the Pennsylvania Philharmonic, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, the Endless Mountain Music Festival, and the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra, where she served as guest concertmaster in the 2015-2016 season, and returned as concertmaster for the 2016-2017 season. DiCarlo also guest conducted the Lynchburg Symphony for the Bernstein Bash event in October 2018. She has performed abroad in Austria, China, and Tibet, and has collaborated with rock, jazz, and Spanish ensembles for various events and performances. The song “Rain”, which featured DiCarlo, aired on Season 8 of Grey’s Anatomy in 2011.
In addition to DiCarlo’s many musical pursuits, she is also a published author. Her debut novel was released in May 2019.
Justin has an incredibly diverse background including achieving Eagle Scout, serving as a race mechanic for Velocity Motorsports, completing a two year mission trip in the Dominican Republic, a stint in law enforcement as a Deputy in the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department and then transitioning to Spanish interpreter for the county. Justin is originally from Statesville, NC and currently lives in Burlington with his wife and young daughter.
Hill Aircraft and Auto Designs
He started his own business, Hill Aircraft and Auto Designs, restoring and painting vintage and modern race cars and planes, where he has become a specialist in metal and composites work and an artist in every sense of the word.
Training coordinator at AKG of America
In 2018, he began working at AKG of America as a Training Coordinator, working in tandem with engineers, production crews, and human resources to develop and implement training materials and work instructions in both English and Spanish.
